Post Resurrection Day

In grief and confusion
Unaware death would come
Though forewarned and projected
Still surprised that the one
Who would be he who rescues
Takes the matter in hand
Folks are mourning and weeping
In death, can’t understand

In gathered communion
Or retreating to home
Weeping in sadness
Where love’s presence was last known
In great fear of the people
Behind doors shut tight
Second guessing the knowledge
All could possibly come right

While stunned and afraid
Hunkered, weath’ring the storm
A few go to administer
A service perform
Upon arrival…amazed!
Alarmed, trembling with fear
When called near by name
Joy accompanies the tear

Receiving of messages
Rekindling hope
Pass on to those huddled
Some believe, doubters mope
But heart’s reignited
By message relayed
Run to prove hope’s fulfilment
Has not been delayed

With soul, spirit and mind
Still all in a whirl
The hope-filled run wild to
Where the women’s message unfurled
Rushing in, holding back
Suspicion still makes unsure
But impending visitation
Soon confirms what they saw

Conversation and reason
Slow of heart to believe
What was spoken and written
Opened up to be seen
Hearts stirring with passion
As the one whom they’ve known
Is gone in a moment
Recognised as he’s flown

When their loved one, departed,
Reappears in their midst
Invoking terror and fear
E’en while he speaks to them ‘peace’
Doubting their own eyes
And the witness of friends
They are glad when they see him
Though some don’t assent or attend

When alone some defer
To familiar scenes
Recognise the distinctive
And miraculous themes
No need to enquire
As to ‘who’, ‘cause they know
Then their thoughts are made clear
Pieced together to show

New direction for waiting
Till one will arrive
To bring discernment and comfort
To those who’ll reside
In the family of God
To bring others along
On this journey, restoring
All who’ll come, and belong

What will YOU do
With the one who was born
Lived among us, his humans
By humans, had his life torn
The one who walked, glory hidden
Gave up his breath
Then, in life new, returned
Met with those he had left?
As in the day…
Some believed what they saw
Or heard when they walked
Maybe sat on the shore;
Others doubted, suspicious
Of who their own eyes beheld
Or the voice who expounded
Stories old, new to tell
What will YOU do?
How will YOU respond?
To the one who designed you in love
Paid highly for YOU to come

Rescue

Waiting for rescue
Longing for one
One who will save me
Oh! When will one come

Alone on a ledge
The great depths below
I seek safety above me
But above I can’t go

Who is it I long for
This one who can reach
Down into the jagged
Inaccessible niche

I cannot imagine…
Is there even a one?
Who could possibly find me
In this place where I’ve gone?

Then I hear a voice calling
Hope rustles the trees
It’s my name that is wafting
Down to me on the breeze

I look up and away
From the dark and the gloom
The trajectory that had
Once held my doom

I see the one, hear the voice
And reach for the hand
That was outstretched toward me
About to fall from this land

The voice brings a calm
As I’m called by my name
Like the wings of an eagle
The hand lifts me from shame

No longer alone
Not at risk of the fall
In this high place of refuge
Snuggled in, free from all

Flutterby

Flitter by, little butterfly
Taste and see what’s good
Waste not a moment, butterfly
Miss not any sweet you could

Life is short, little butterfly
Do you only need a sip
Will you not rest, little butterfly
Before life to its end does slip

I’m watching you little butterfly
Though you zip, from here to there
I see you sit, little butterfly
Moments still, amidst life’s care

Sixteenth Reflection

You took me to the mountains
And underneath the earth
Then high atop a canyon
To water pouring down, dispersed
We sat upon the sand
And walked along the shore
I closed my eyes, your song to me
All around me soared

And now I sit and wonder
At the wonder that you’ve been
You safely lead me out to
My desired, but missing dreams
We shared the day I had not noticed
Till the day was halfway done
Where I had feared to go alone
You lead me…forever faithful one

Mangelwurzel

If you MANGEL the WURZEL
That you BEET in the FIELD
And the MAN-GOLD is CHARD
So the FODDER’s not FEED
As CRASSA the ROOT
And the VEGETABLE seem
There’s none so VULGARIS
As the SWOLLEN BETA ROOTs be

So in LARGE WHITE and YELLOW
With a SUGARy RED
And CENTURIES old
It will stand in good stead
The GOLDen CHARD, WURZEL ROOT
OF SCARCITY known
That grand MANGELWURZEL
Is a mouthful renowned

Little People

A little person, just like me!
I wonder what it’s like to be
Another little person who
Moves about, as I do too

I wonder if they ride in cars…
In buses, trams, or trains so fast
Do they walk down to the park?
When they sleep in bed, is it light or dark?

They have big people, just like me!
When they awake, is it these they see?
Do they enjoy a warm embrace?
As I do, when mine see my face

And what about the others here?
Who sit by us; some far, some near
They have no little person, so…
Perhaps I’ll go and say hello

And a River Runs Right Through It

Forever home
All things new
A city awed
A peace imbued

And a river runs right through it

Downward, paced
Set from on high
Readymade, adorned
Provide

And a river runs right through it

Swept of tear
And shadow’s death
Away! Begone!
Reside amidst

And a river runs right through him

Behold! The new!
And all things true!
Beginning’s end
To thirst will rend

Because a river runs right through him

Light-of-life
Illumined home
Gated, walled
By those I’ve known

And a river runs right through him

Founded firm
On lives hard-won
By Lion-Lamb
Betroth-ed one

And a river runs right through him

Divinely lit
The glory sun
Is presence
Walking with his ones

And a river runs right through him

Open door
Night is gone
Engrave-ed names
Of those who come

And a river runs right through it

The purest flow
Forth-going from
The lamb enthroned
Heals every one
Planted by
The banks to feed
Those never more
In curse to bleed
While looking on
Her shepherd’s face
The bride is home
Unending grace

And a river runs right through it

In Praise of the Glory of Grace

Known prior to presence
Fitted for plan
Chosen in favour
Time and boundary in hand
Purposed design
Relational pull
Returning provision
Future payment in full

Blood red for cleansing
Death to give life
Light over darkness
Stained, then brightness of white
Nothing deserved
Not-a-one is a right
No earning, demanding
But Love bestows ‘cause he’s right

Love motivation
Initial design
Love intervention
When Love’s object’s confined
Freedom from bondage
Purchased from chains
Loved back to life
Restored to Love’s family name

Formed – then a turning
Pursued – all in love
Invited back into
The family of God
Oh the weight! Oh the heaviness!
So apparent and seen
The designer, redeemer
In whom I am fully me

Wonder of wonders!
Unconditional love
Descending on me
Certain hope from above
The call’s invitation?
To declare all my need
Then all praise to the glorious grace
I’ve been freed!

D-Day

D-Day, at the first
Was the beginning of the end
Of that long, protracted woe
When darkness did descend
D-Day now for me
Marks the end of what began
So many years ago
That its presence I rescind

Forever changed by woes
They could never have perceived
Crushed of soul by darkened sorrow
Ending? Joyous treasures! Sorrow’s seed
And my pounding, crushing, tearing
Has now softened over time
I am altered, modelled after
My once-crushed saviour, who is mine

No need to fear a day’s refining
Though, if we dwell, that’s what we do
He’ll keep us, even in the furnace
Grant unknown strength to follow through
And when we reach another shore
Carried by the crashing waves
That had once appeared our ending
We’ll find he, once again, has saved

Beauty from the ashes
Oil of joy for mourn
Daylight follows darkness
Calm behind the storm
The trial of the crucible
Removing things held dear
Is the path to new creations
Even me, and you, down here
